Basin Head Watershed & Wildlife

Basin Head MPA
Basin Head has a rich ecosystem consisting of many species of plants, fish, mammals and birds. The Basin Head Lagoon Ecosystem Conservation Committee (BHLECC) was established in 1999 and was selected as an Area of Interest (AOI) under the Marine Protected Areas (MPA) program under Canada's Oceans Act. The selection was a result of collaborative efforts between the BHLECC, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, and the province of PEI. In 2005, it was officially designated as a Marine Protected Area due to the unique strain of Irish Moss common to the area. The MPA includes the lagoon, the watershed arm and the outer bank just beyond the wharf. We are extremely pleased that this area is now a protected location for years to come. It is home not only to a unique strain of Irish moss but also to many species of migratory birds, waterfowl, resident fin fish species and a great deal of flora and fauna.

The Souris Branch of the PEI Wildlife Federation manages the Basin Head watershed. Their comprehensive management plan can be seen at this link.
